President Donald J. Trump announced that the United States will immediately provide political risk insurance and financial guarantees for energy tankers and other ships operating in the Gulf region.
The program will be offered through the U.S. Development Finance Corporation, providing shipping companies with financial protection as they move oil and energy supplies through the region.

The announcement comes as tanker traffic has begun avoiding the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway near Iran that handles roughly one-fourth of the world’s maritime oil trade, along with massive shipments of liquefied natural gas.

President Trump also signaled that the United States Navy could escort energy tankers through the Strait of Hormuz if necessary, ensuring vessels can safely pass through the strategic corridor.
“If necessary, the United States Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, as soon as possible,” Trump said.
