Deepening His Crime Crackdown, Trump Plans to Patrol D.C. Streets With Police and National Guard

WASHINGTON — President Trump said Thursday he plans to personally patrol the streets of Washington, D.C., alongside the Metropolitan Police Department and National Guard troops, as part of a sweeping federal crackdown on crime.

“I’m going to be going out tonight, I think, with the police and with the military, of course. So we’re going to do a job,” Trump told conservative radio host Todd Starnes. “The National Guard is great. They’ve done a fantastic job.”

The announcement comes after Trump’s decision earlier this month to federalize the city’s police department and deploy hundreds of National Guard troops across the capital. White House officials said Thursday that more than 600 arrests have been made since the surge began on Aug. 7, including 251 immigrants in the country illegally.

Administration officials have insisted that the city’s crime problem remains “unacceptable,” despite statistics showing violent crime declining in recent years. Trump, however, has maintained that the numbers do not reflect the reality of lawlessness and decay in the nation’s capital.

Vice President Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller met with National Guard troops at Union Station on Wednesday to thank them for their work. Miller, dismissing protests against the crackdown, said the administration would “get back to the business of protecting the American people and the citizens of Washington, D.C.”

By stepping onto the streets himself, President Trump is underscoring his commitment to restoring safety and order in the nation’s capital.
