The order comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Moscow, particularly over the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Trump’s action, shared on his Truth Social platform, was in direct response to recent threats issued by Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and current deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council. Medvedev, a longtime hardliner and vocal critic of the West, had mocked Trump’s sanctions ultimatum and escalated his rhetoric by suggesting that Trump was leading the U.S. toward war.
“I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” President Trump posted. “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances.”

Medvedev, known for his frequent and often belligerent social media tirades, responded with insults and condescension, suggesting that Trump was overstepping and invoking comparisons to “Sleepy Joe,” a nickname for former President Biden. However, most Western diplomats dismissed Medvedev’s remarks as bluster, noting that his influence has long been overshadowed by President Vladimir Putin.
Despite Medvedev’s defiance, the Russian government has yet to formally respond to Trump’s latest actions. Analysts say the Kremlin is watching carefully, aware that Trump has not hesitated in the past to take direct military action, such as the 2020 strike that killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani or the 2025 air campaign that dismantled Iranian nuclear facilities.
